Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons emergency meeting on toxic

An emergency meeting has been opened by the global chemical weapons watchdog to discuss concerns about stockpiles of toxic chemicals in Syria following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) told Syria that the country is bound by rules to protect and destroy dangerous substances, such as chlorine gas, after rebels stormed the capital, Damascus, at the weekend.

The Assad regime has denied using chemical weapons, but the OPCW found evidence showing their repeated use by Syria in its civil war.

Now, in a rare move, the OPCW's executive council has called a meeting, hoping that under a new government, some of its 80 inspectors might be allowed to pursue investigations into Syria's chemical weapons program.

The last time the OPCW called an emergency meeting was in 2018, in response to the chemical attack in Douma, a town near Damascus, when around 40 people were killed by poison gas.

The 193 member states of the OPCW are required to disclose their chemical weapons programs and dismantle them.
