US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reiterated "the importance of protecting civilians during Israel Defense Forces operations."
The order was given in a phone call Friday with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, according to a Pentagon readout.
Austin also stressed the urgent need for "the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza" and for Hamas to release all hostages, the Pentagon said.
Austin's call comes as the Israel Defense Forces announced it is "expanding ground operations" in the Gaza Strip and "operating forcefully" on all fronts to meet its goals in the fight against Hamas.
