Israel has said it will support US President Donald Trump's plans to impose a naval blockade on Iran, as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made the statement during a cabinet meeting on Monday, following the failure of peace talks between the United States and Iran, held over the weekend in Pakistan.
“Iran has violated the rules [of the peace talks in Pakistan] and President Trump has decided to impose a naval blockade,” Netanyahu said during the meeting, according to a video released by his office. “We, of course, support this firm position and are in constant coordination with the United States.”
He added that he had been briefed by US Vice President JD Vance after the negotiations in Islamabad ended without an agreement. According to him, Vance contacted him from the plane after departure and “made it clear that the central issue is the removal of all enriched material and ensuring that there is no further enrichment.”
The US, through this measure, aims to increase pressure on Tehran, particularly by restricting oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz, a key corridor for global energy supply.
Iran has called the plan illegal and warned of retaliation, while several European countries have stressed the need to maintain freedom of navigation and stability in international energy markets.
