Right-wing candidate Abelardo de la Espriella has narrowly won Colombia's presidential election, according to an initial vote count, marking a dramatic shift in how the government will deal with the country's internal armed conflict and violence.
De la Espriella, who was supported by Donald Trump, has pledged a military crackdown against illegal armed groups, drug trafficking and crime.
He defeated left-wing Iván Cepeda, a close ally of President Gustavo Petro.
De la Espriella said that "today a new phase begins for our country, a phase built on the free and democratic will of millions of citizens who chose to believe in a great, safe, prosperous and full of opportunities Colombia."
With over 99% of the votes counted, de la Espriella has won nearly 49.7% of the vote, while Cepeda has won 48.7%. Cepeda has not conceded defeat, saying that the preliminary count "is not yet official or binding."
During the celebrations, De la Espriella's supporters wore hats similar to those of Trump supporters, saying "Let's make Colombia great again."
In a reaction on "Social Truth," Donald Trump considered the result a big victory.
Meanwhile, candidate Iván Cepeda has not yet conceded defeat, stressing that the preliminary count does not constitute an official result. He stated that he will wait for the completion of the verification process and the official announcement of the result before recognizing the winner.
De la Espriella's likely victory is expected to bring about changes in Colombia's security policies. During the campaign, he pledged a tougher approach to illegal armed groups, drug trafficking and organized crime.
His supporters celebrated the result in Barranquilla with national flags, music and fireworks. Many wore hats with the slogan "Make Colombia Great Again," a reference to Donald Trump's political slogan.
