Sergei Karaganov, 73, also known as Professor Doomsday, has claimed that launching tactical atomic weapons is the only way to prevent a larger war between the US and Russia.
Vladimir Putin has been warned that failing to deploy nuclear weapons in Europe would constitute a “terrible sin.” The extraordinary claims came from Sergei Karaganov, 73, nicknamed Professor Doomsday, who serves as honorary chairman of the Russian Council for Foreign and Defense Policy and argues that deploying tactical atomic weapons represents the only method of avoiding a wider conflict between America and Russia.
He joins a growing list of Putin loyalists and Kremlin voices calling for a nuclear escalation in the Ukrainian conflict and a confrontation with NATO. The comments come after what appears to be a shift in stance from US President Donald Trump, who has suggested that Ukraine could effectively retake all the territory occupied by Putin's forces.
During an appearance on Russian state television, the political scientist repeated familiar Russian propaganda that often refers to an alleged threat emanating from the country's western border with NATO allies.
"We must abandon some of the ill-conceived ideas crafted by our predecessors, who still say that a nuclear war should not happen and that it can never be won."
"This is absolute absurdity. A nuclear war can be won, God forbid it happens," he said.
The Putin supporter continues, "Don't abandon the idea that a nuclear war cannot be won, we could find ourselves in a very long and destructive war with this still-rich Europe."
"And ultimately, God forbid, we tire our people. And most importantly, we could allow this war to spread to all of humanity. This European contagion must be eradicated."
"We need to prepare to attack, or at least make them understand that we are ready. It won't necessarily be a nuclear attack... but we need to prepare."
High-profile television commentator Vladimir Solovyov, who supports atomic attacks, laughed heartily as he called on his evening television program for Oxford and Cambridge to be bombed to wipe out Britain's elite and their academic institutions.
Solovyov used Kremlin-backed state television to target Britain's ruling class, calling the "idiots" in government and the monarchy mere figureheads, while claiming that a secret establishment was pulling the strings. He questioned: "Who really rules Great Britain?"
