Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has reacted after the continuous protests of farmers in Greece.
"Open dialogue takes place with open roads. No one can blackmail the society and block the roads, no matter how fair their demand is", said Mitsotakis.
Addressing the farmers, the Greek Prime Minister added: "we were the ones who lowered taxes for farmers, who negotiated a common agricultural policy which has difficulties, and here we are again discussing how we can do it better. We are always open for dialogue".
After not agreeing and not being satisfied with the Mitsotakis government's statements, the representatives of Greek farmers after a meeting in Nikaia of Larissa have decided to escalate their protest by blocking the country's roads and customs.
They present seven requirements, which are common to all and consider their fulfillment as crucial. Specifically, they demand:
- Tax-free oil
- 7 cents per kilowatt hour, the price of electricity
- Subsidy for supplies and animal feed
- Not to apply the Common Agricultural Policy and to renegotiate it
- 100% compensation and replacement of lost income from agricultural products
- Those that come from uncontrolled export should not be presented as Greek products.
The individual claims of farmers from Thessaly regarding compensation for damages from storm Daniel will be listed in an appendix to their main claims.
In addition to Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal and France were affected by farmers' protests.
