Protesters 'occupy' Belgrade, Vučić: I will not let street protests

A large number of students, who have been protesting for nearly four months demanding accountability for the victims of the tent collapse in Novi Sad, as well as citizens, gathered in the center of Belgrade.

The protest is scheduled for 4:00 PM in front of the Serbian Parliament building.

A large number of people have come or are moving towards the center of the Serbian capital from various directions in Belgrade, as well as other cities in Serbia.

It can already be said that this is one of the largest, if not the largest, anti-government demonstrations in recent decades, Serbian media report.

Reuters reports that tens of thousands of people have gathered in Belgrade.

The collapse of a tent in Novi Sad in early November last year sparked massive protests in Serbia and is the biggest test yet for the government led by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.

However, the day before the protest he said that he "is not afraid of anything" and that he will not allow street protests to change the government.

"There will be no transitional government as long as I am alive. I do not agree with blackmail and pressure, I am the president of Serbia and I will not allow the street to determine the rules in this country," he said.
