New details have emerged from behind the scenes of the Trump-Zelensky debate during their tense meeting yesterday at the White House in Washington.
The Ukrainian president had been advised to wear a suit to the White House and Donald Trump was offended when he saw that Zelensky was dressed in plain clothes.
"Ahead of the heated meeting, Volodymyr Zelensky was advised by Trump's team to ditch his usual military-style attire and wear something more formal," Axios reports.
However, Zelensky did not listen to the advice and instead decided to wear black, American media wrote.
According to two sources who spoke to Axios, Zelensky's attire irritated Trump.
Also during questions with reporters yesterday at the White House, reporter Brian Glenn asked Zelensky, "why don't you wear a suit," accusing him of disrespect for America.
The conversation unfolds:
"Why aren't you wearing a suit? Do you have a suit?" the reporter asked.
"Do you have a problem?" Zelensky replied.
"Many Americans have a problem with those who don't respect the Oval Office dress code," the journalist responded.
Zelensky then said he would wear a suit after the end of the Russia-Ukraine war, which began in 2022.
"I'll wear a suit after this war is over, yes. Maybe something like yours, maybe something better. I don't know, we'll see. Maybe something cheaper. Thanks," he replied.
