Former US ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul, believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin is very afraid of losing Crimea.
Speaking on the Ukrainian channel "Espresso TV", the former ambassador said: "Putin is afraid of transferring the war in Crimea to your country, not his. This is what he fears most, because it would undermine the legitimacy of his war in Russia."
McFaul added that Putin's inability to hold Crimea would be a "threatening consequence for his regime."
Referring to the participation of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in the BRICS summit instead of Putin, the former ambassador said that this was proof of Putin's fear of appearing before the International Criminal Court in case of arrest.
