German fighter jets left on Saturday to help Slovakia defend its airspace after the latter donated most of its defense equipment to Ukraine.
German planes will defend this NATO country until December 22, the German Air Force has said.
The deployed aircraft will be continuously active in identifying hostile movements in Slovakian airspace, the German military has said.
Slovakia is a direct neighbor of Ukraine, which has been fighting the Russian invasion since February last year.
Slovakia has delivered its S-300 air defense systems to Ukraine in April 2022.
As a replacement, the United States and the Netherlands have given Slovakia a Patriot missile defense system, while Germany has given two more.
However, they have since withdrawn the batteries of the Patriot systems from this site.
From the period when Slovakia handed over some additional Soviet-era weapons to Ukraine, its airspace has been secured by Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary./ REL
