The United States is deeply concerned by reports that Hezbollah - the Lebanese group designated as a terrorist organization by Washington - fired a missile aimed at Israel's intelligence service.
White House national security spokesman John Kirby said the US still believes a diplomatic solution can reduce tensions on the Lebanon-Israel border.
"Very disturbing," Kirby said in an interview with CNN. "Further proof... that Israel is facing a legitimate threat from a terrorist group supported by Iran."
Kirby said the US will continue to support Israel's right to defend itself.
"No nation should live under such threats that come from across the border, from its neighbors," he said.
On the morning of September 25, Hezbollah fired a ballistic missile toward Tel Aviv, further escalating the situation. A day earlier, the Israeli army bombed Lebanon, as hundreds of people have been killed in Lebanon in recent days as a result of Israeli attacks.
Israel's military said it shot down a surface-to-surface ballistic missile and activated air raid sirens in Tel Aviv, reporting no casualties or damage.
Hezbollah said it fired the Qader 1 ballistic missile at the headquarters of Israel's Mossad intelligence agency.
Hezbollah and Israel have exchanged fire daily since the war in Gaza began in October between Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the US and the European Union./ REL
