United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that at the moment Washington has no objections to the passage of some oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, in order to maintain the supply of the global energy market.
In an interview with CNBC News, Bessent said that there is a gradual increase in the movement of ships transporting fuel in this strategic corridor.
"We are seeing more and more tankers starting to come through. Iranian ships have already started to come through and we have allowed that to happen to supply the rest of the world. We have seen Indian ships coming through now and we believe some Chinese ships have been sidelined," he said.
According to Bessent, this process is expected to accelerate before a defensive fleet is deployed in the Persian Gulf.
"This needs to start accelerating before there is any flotilla or defensive armada in the Persian Gulf. We think there will be a natural opening that the Iranians are letting loose. And for now, we are okay with that. We want the world to be well supplied ," he added.
However, the US official did not give a clear timeframe for how long the conflict in the region might last.
"I don't know how many weeks it will last," Bessent said when asked about the duration of the clash.
Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump stated that he is putting pressure on at least seven countries to increase efforts to secure and fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important routes for global oil transportation.
