The US ambassador to Serbia, Christopher Hill, during his speech at the Belgrade Security Conference, would like Serbia to recognize Kosovo as an independent state, but according to him, the problem is more complex than that.
"I would like Serbia to understand and recognize that Kosovo is an independent state, but the problem is more complex than that," said Hill, reports N1.
According to him, it is extremely important to understand what happened on September 24 during the armed attack by Serbs in Banjska, Kosovo.
" As the first step toward solving the problem, we need to really hold those responsible for what happened accountable so it doesn't happen again ," Hill said.
Hill said that the second step would be to calm the situation in the north of Kosovo and then find a political solution.
" It is important that the US and the EU jointly try to solve the problems of the Western Balkans. Kosovo is still a very difficult problem for a reason. People say that Serbia just needs to understand that Kosovo is an independent state, get over it and move on. I would also like her to do that, but the fact is that the problem is much more complex ," said Hill.
