The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has called for restraint in the Middle East, amid high military tensions between the US, Israel and Iran, to avoid any risk to the nuclear security of people in the region.
In a statement distributed today on Platform X, the IAEA stressed that it is closely monitoring developments in the region and is in constant contact with the relevant countries. So far, no radiological impact has been reported in the region as a result of military attacks or countermeasures, according to the agency.
"The agency will continue to monitor the situation and provide continuous updates ," the IAEA added.
This appeal comes after the recent joint US-Israeli attacks on targets in Iran, after which Tehran has carried out counterattacks on US bases in the region.
Despite reported damage to several facilities, the IAEA has not confirmed whether Iranian nuclear targets have been directly hit, but has expressed concern about the possibility of nuclear risks if the conflicts escalate further.
