US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, after a meeting between senior US and Chinese officials in Beijing, said that US policy towards Taiwan remains unchanged.
The top US diplomat said that China always raises the issue in meetings and that they always make their position clear.
"From our perspective, any forced change to the status quo in the situation would be bad for both countries. One of the things that the Chinese emphasize, which we agree on, is strategic stability in our relationship," Rubio said in an interview with NBC News in Beijing, a clip of which was posted Thursday morning.
Rubio said the issue of future U.S. arms sales to the island has been discussed in the past, but did not feature prominently in today's discussion.
"We already know where they stand on this. Remember, Congress plays a role in that process as well. And we have sold them weapons in the past, that's been going on since December, which they were very upset about. And that's a decision that the president has to make, as Congress takes it over and as Congress decides what to do with those issues, we will respond accordingly ," he concluded.
