"TikTok" bans access in the US, message to citizens: We are lucky that

The TikTok ban comes a day before Trump's inauguration.

TikTok has blocked access to its users in the United States. The move came shortly before a court ruling banning the app took effect.

" A law banning TikTok has been passed in the United States ," reads a message displayed to users who tried to use the social network. " Unfortunately, this means you cannot use TikTok for now. We are fortunate that President Trump has said he will work with us to find a solution to restore TikTok once he takes office. Stay tuned! " The ban comes a day before Trump's inauguration.

In fact, Trump intends to keep TikTok active in the United States by extending access for at least another 90 days, as provided for by the Congressional law (the validity of which has just been confirmed by a Supreme Court decision) which bans it if the property remains in Chinese hands.

The case, however, is far from resolved: for now there is no practical basis for negotiations, given the severity with which the company has repeated its no to selling the platform.

Trump told NBC that he "most likely" will use the clause in the law that allows him to delay its request for three months, but he is moving cautiously: " It seems appropriate to me, but I haven't decided yet. I have to evaluate it carefully: it's a very big issue. If I decide on the extension, I can announce it on Monday after the oath ."

Until a few hours ago, it remained unclear what would happen between today and Trump's executive order. Given that Joe Biden had made it clear that his Administration would not carry out any acts related to this law, leaving the authority to his successor.

But it was TikTok itself that raised the stakes on this point: first, it said, in a note, that the White House's assurances were not sufficient and that without a legally binding act blocking the implementation of the law, the network would block the service itself. It also indicated that the American companies that own TikTok (Apple and Google-Alphabet) and Oracle, which provides its servers, should have done the same: according to the social network, under the rules voted in April, all of them risk very high fines (hundreds of millions of dollars; at the moment these companies have not yet said how they will behave in the coming hours).

The White House had dismissed TikTok's ultimatum as a ploy to gain legal recognition

The case has paradoxical aspects: Trump, who in his first term had decided to ban TikTok, now wants to save it. Under pressure from his friend (and partner in Truth Social) Jeff Yass, a billionaire who is a shareholder of ByteDance (a holding company under Chinese law but 60% owned by international funds, especially the US, such as BlackRock and General Atlantic), Donald became its protector, invited users to vote for him and, after the election, expressed gratitude: "The vote of the young people brought me back."

But even Democrats, who voted narrowly in April, along with Republicans, for the ban, are now backing down, fearful of the anger of many of TikTok's 170 million American users who don't want to lose the service. /Pamphlet
