A new wave of cold is expected to sweep across parts of the United States in the coming days, accompanied by cold winds, snow and frost.
Cold temperatures forecast for Monday in Washington forced authorities to move President-elect Trump's inauguration ceremony indoors at the Capitol.
Across much of the United States, from the Rockies in Colorado to the northern states, temperatures will drop starting Sunday and continue throughout next week, reaching -40 degrees Celsius or lower in the Dakotas and northern Minnesota, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Marc Chenard.
In such weather conditions, frostbite can occur if any part of the human body is exposed to these temperatures, even for less than 10 minutes. Meteorological institute officials urged residents to wear jackets, hats and gloves and spend as little time outdoors as possible.
Authorities expect the rain and snow to cause traffic problems, especially in parts of the country that don't usually experience such winter weather./VOA
