The people of Lebanon have been horrified by Israel's latest attack, which left 12 dead and several injured. The attack hit the civil defense center near the city of Baalbek and Tayouneh, in East Lebanon. Among the victims, reports the Lebanese civil defense quoted by Al Jazeera, there are 5 health workers.
Israel made public the evacuation order a mandatory evacuation order for residents. Crowds of people immediately gathered at the scene.
Israel has this week stepped up airstrikes against southern Beirut suburbs controlled by Hezbollah - an escalation that has coincided with US-led diplomatic outreach to end the conflict.
The American media Wall Street Journal has announced that Donald Trump has "approved" a proposal for a cease-fire for Lebanon. Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer announced the plan to Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence. Trump also "expressed confidence that this would be done before he entered the Oval Office" on January 20.
The plan, consulted by the Wall Street Journal, calls for the withdrawal of Hezbollah troops and weapons from the border with Israel north of the Litani River. The Lebanese army and UN peacekeeping forces are tasked with ensuring that Hezbollah militants do not return.
Meanwhile, the US ambassador to Lebanon presented a draft ceasefire proposal on Thursday to Lebanon's parliament speaker Nabih Berri, who is backed by Hezbollah to negotiate, two senior Lebanese political sources told Reuters without giving further details. The draft was Washington's first written proposal to halt fighting between its ally Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah in at least several weeks, the sources said.
A senior diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity to Reuters, estimated that more time was needed to reach a ceasefire and hoped it could be achieved.
