The head of a major US healthcare company has been shot dead in New York in what is said to be a planned assassination attempt.
Brian Thompson, 50, was fatally shot in the chest at 6:46 a.m. local time outside the Hilton Hotel in midtown Manhattan. He was the chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare as of April 2021.
He was taken to a nearby hospital but could not be saved.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said it appeared the shooting was "a premeditated murder."
The wife of Mr. Thompson, Paulette Thompson, said he had received several threats. "There have been some threats," she said in a phone call to NBC News. "I don't know the details. I just know he said there were some people who threatened him."
It is suspected that the perpetrator used a weapon with a silencer. The suspect is a white male wearing a black hoodie, black pants and a gray backpack.
UnitedHealthcare is the right wing of the health care insurance giant UnitedHealth Group.
The company canceled the remainder of its annual meeting with investors in New York City, where it was updating Wall Street on its direction and expectations for the coming year. Mr. Thompson was to speak at the conference.
