South Korean lawmakers have launched impeachment proceedings against President Yoon Suk Yeol after his shock move to impose a state of curfew in the country. Adding to the president's troubles is the scandal of his wife's bag, one of the reasons for the unrest in the country.
President Yoon was already in trouble when a video of his wife, Kim Keon Hee, accepting a designer bag from a Korean-American pastor began circulating last year.
The First Lady is alleged to have broken rules on gifts, enacted to protect against corruption. But Yoon's response plunged his government into a full-blown crisis.
Yoon called the video, filmed by a hidden camera, a stunt aimed at damaging his party ahead of key legislative elections and said his wife was simply too nice to "cold-heartedly reject" the valuable Dior bag 2200 dollars.
His party suffered massive losses in that election in April, and as concern continued to grow, last month Yoon finally apologized on behalf of his wife - a full year after the scandal first broke.
But Yoon ruled out allowing an investigation into the incident, and public outrage has only intensified since then.
