US President Donald Trump held a tense phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after Israel carried out an airstrike targeting Hamas leaders in Qatar.
Trump told Netanyahu that the decision to strike inside the territory of a close US ally was "reckless."
Netanyahu reportedly responded that he had a short window of opportunity and took advantage of it.
A second call that same day was more cordial, as Trump asked if the operation had been successful.
Israel carried out the attack in Doha in an attempt to assassinate Hamas' political leadership. The group said its key figures survived, although five people were killed, including the son of the exiled Gaza leader and negotiator Khalil al-Hayya.
The attack has prompted strong international condemnation, especially as Qatar has been hosting talks aimed at reaching a ceasefire in the Gaza war.
Israel's ambassador to the US vowed that Hamas leaders would be targeted again if they survived Tuesday's airstrike in Qatar, warning that the group was "targeted." Yechiel Leiter said: "We will pursue and destroy those who seek to destroy us."
