United States President-elect Donald Trump said on Monday that on his first day in office he would impose a 25% tariff on all products from Mexico and Canada, and an additional 10% tariff on goods from China. citing their role in illegal immigration and the illegal drug trade.
"On January 20th, among the first of many Executive Orders, I will sign all the necessary documents to impose a 25 percent tariff on all products from Mexico and Canada entering the United States," one post said . of Mr. Trump on the "Truth Social" network.
Mr Trump said the tariffs would remain in place until both countries stop the flow of drugs, particularly fentanyl, and illegal immigrants into the US.
The president-elect also accused China of not taking strong enough action to stem the flow of illegal drugs arriving in the United States through the Mexican border.
"We will place a 10 percent tariff on all Chinese products coming into the United States of America, which will not be removed until they stop the flow of drugs ," Mr. Trump's tweet said.
The president-elect has previously pledged to end China's most-favored-nation trade status and impose tariffs of more than 60 percent on Chinese imports, far higher than those imposed during his first term.
The Chinese economy is in a much more difficult position, given the slump in the housing and real estate market, public debt risks and weakening domestic consumption demands.
The dollar rose more than 2% against the Mexican peso after Mr. Trump's comments were published on his social media platform./ VOA
