Now America's No. 1 problem right now is that Donald Trump has no plan. He has no plan for how he's going to achieve peace in Ukraine. No plan for how he's going to annex Canada. Above all, he has no plan for what to do if arbitrary and high tariffs on his immediate neighbors hurt the American economy.
That's why, after imposing tariffs on Mexico and Canada, he withdrew them just two days later. But that hasn't stopped key economic indicators from taking a nosedive. U.S. consumer spending fell in January for the first time in two years.
There is a panic among purchasing managers. Late payments on car loans have reached their highest level in 30 years. And the Dow Jones stock index lost $1.1 trillion on Friday, March 7 alone.
So the chances of an economic recession in the US are high. If you voluntarily raise the price of imports, as Trump has done by imposing a 10 percent tariff on Chinese goods, and then doubling it to 20 percent, this will inevitably lead to increased inflation.
Inflation also sank Joe Biden, despite his presidency bringing a boom in investment and jobs to the central states of the US. But Trump seems oblivious to the approaching storm.
He believes that injecting chaos and uncertainty into everything - from his trade relations with close neighbors to the legal status of Greenland - will favor the new coalition of tech billionaires that has gathered around the Trump 2.0 project.
The paradox is that Bidennomics was working. The mix of tax cuts, deregulation, and monetary stimulus was attracting a lot of investment.
In the green energy sector and they were opening up a lot of new jobs. Trump is following a different course, or rather a series of courses. Because to reiterate my original thought: he doesn't seem to have a plan. If the tariffs become permanent, they will bring about a shift in production from China, Canada and Mexico to the US.
But his tariff war with his immediate neighbors shows that this is more about gestures. And while this move is good for hypnotizing MAGA fanatics, it is not economic policy.

I don't know how deep the economic recession in the US will be. Nor whether it would be amplified by a combination of financial market turmoil and a Bitcoin collapse, which would make it look like a picnic of the 2008 crisis.
