The Department of Education plans to lay off over 1,300 employees, halving the number of staff as part of President Trump's plans to eliminate the agency.
After today's recess, the number of staff that will remain is expected to be half of its 4,100 employees. Education Secretary Linda McMahon, confirmed a few days ago by the Senate, said after taking office that her goal was to reduce bureaucracy and have funds go to individual states.
"There are programs that are very good, but they need to be administered by the states," she said Tuesday in an interview with the Fox News network.
On March 3, the day she was confirmed by the Senate, Secretary McMahon, through a message to the Department, warned employees to prepare for deep cuts.
Yesterday, employees were notified that the headquarters in Washington, as well as regional offices in several other states, would be closed on Wednesday and reopen on Thursday. The only reason given in the notice was “for safety reasons.”
