Trump pessimistic about Ukraine's position in negotiations with Russia:

President Donald Trump said Thursday that he was "not happy" with President Vladimir Putin after Russia launched its deadliest attack on Kiev in months, elaborating on his comments earlier in the day urging Putin to stop his bombing.

"I didn't like last night - I wasn't happy with it, and we're in the middle of peace talks, and the missiles were launched," Trump said in the Oval Office in response to a question from CNN about what he meant after posting "Vladimir, STOP!" in a post on Truth Social.

The president declined to say whether he is considering additional sanctions on Russia if the attacks do not stop.

" I'd rather answer this question in a week. I want to see if we can have a deal. There's no reason to answer now, but I won't be happy. Let me put it this way - things, things will happen," he added.

Pushed on whether Ukraine might have to cede territory to Russia to secure a ceasefire, Trump remained vague, saying: "It depends on which territory."

"We're going to do the best we can, but they lost a lot of territory. They say, 'Well, can you give it back?' I think it's going to be a very difficult thing to do ," the president said, noting that Russia took control of Crimea under former President Barack Obama.

Trump said Russia has offered a significant concession in peace talks with Ukraine by not taking all of Ukraine, as he responded to a reporter's question about what Russia was offering in the peace talks.

" Stop taking the whole country, that's a pretty big concession ," Trump added during an Oval Office meeting with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was widely denounced by other countries for invading Ukraine in February 2022, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also sharply withdrawn formal recognition of Russian control over the Crimean region.

Earlier this week, Trump suggested that Zelensky was stalling negotiations, saying the leader had no cards to play. And after expressing displeasure over deadly Russian overnight attacks in Kiev, Trump said today that he still believes Putin is serious about a peace deal.
