Donald Trump said that Chinese President Xi Jinping agrees that Iran should reopen the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important routes for global oil transport, although Beijing gave no official signal that it would put pressure on Tehran.
Speaking on Air Force One after returning from Beijing, where he held two days of talks with Xi Jinping, Trump said he was considering lifting US sanctions on Chinese companies that buy Iranian oil.
China is the largest buyer of Iran's oil and any intervention by it is considered of strategic importance for the Iranian economy and global energy markets.
" I'm not asking for favors, because when you ask for favors, you have to give favors in return ," Trump said when asked if Xi had made a concrete commitment to pressure Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The Chinese president has not publicly commented on his discussions with Trump about Iran. However, the Chinese Foreign Ministry criticized the conflict in the region, saying it is a war that "should not have happened and has no reason to continue."
The Strait of Hormuz is considered a key point for global oil supplies, as a large portion of oil exports from the Persian Gulf to international markets pass through it. Any tension or blockage in it has an immediate impact on global energy prices and the world economy.
