Zelensky launches Ukrainian government restructuring, proposes PM Svyrydenko's removal and broad cabinet changes

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has made government changes in Kiev, in top leadership positions, including replacing current Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.

Through a statement published on the social network "X", Zelensky announced that he had proposed to Svyrydenko to leave the post of prime minister, offering her another important role in the state administration and in Ukraine's international relations.

"I am grateful to Yulia for her clear, consistent and effective work as Prime Minister, for her years of productive service in the Ukrainian team, and for offering her the opportunity to lead a new and important area of relations with a key partner," Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian president did not announce who would succeed Svyrydenko as prime minister, nor did he provide further details on the specific reasons behind the decision. However, he stressed that the changes are necessary to implement a new political strategy for the country.

"I expect that, together with the deputies, we will make the appropriate changes to the Ukrainian government," said the Ukrainian head of state.

According to reports in Kiev, Svyrydenko could be appointed Ukraine's ambassador to the United States, a post of particular importance considering the strategic relations between the two countries, especially in the context of the war with Russia.

Ukrainian opposition MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak stated that Svyrydenko's removal from the post of prime minister would mean a complete reshuffle of the government cabinet.

"This means that she will leave the post of prime minister and the entire government will be reorganized," Zhelezniak said in a reaction published on Telegram.

Under Ukrainian law, the prime minister's resignation must be approved by parliament and automatically entails the resignation of the entire government. After this process, the president and parliament must agree on a new cabinet.

Among the names being touted as possible candidates to lead the government are former Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, who currently holds the post of Energy Minister, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, as well as Serhiy Koretskyi, the head of the state energy company "Naftogaz".

In addition to changing the prime minister, Zelensky announced that there will also be moves in the leadership of several law enforcement agencies, without yet specifying which institutions will be affected.

He announced that among the priorities of the new government will be Ukraine's progress towards membership in the European Union, strengthening border areas, and more efficient management of foreign policy.

"We determined that these changes require a renewal of the Cabinet of Ministers," Zelensky declared.

The reshuffle comes at a critical time for Ukraine, which is still at war with Russia and faces major military, economic and diplomatic challenges. The new government is expected to be tasked with managing the next phase of the war, accelerating the process of European integration and strengthening Kiev's international alliances.

Yulia Svyrydenko took office as Prime Minister in July 2025 and during her term has been one of the key figures in Zelensky's administration, especially in economic matters and cooperation with Western partners.
