"There are still standards that Montenegro has to meet. We have a new government in Montenegro and a new political structure that has started to operate," said the European Commissioner.
The European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Policies, Oliver Varhelji, said he hopes that the intergovernmental conference in June will bring Montenegro to the final stage of membership negotiations with the European Union (EU).
He emphasized that the country is in the final moments of negotiations.
"There are still standards that Montenegro has to meet. We have a new government in Montenegro and a new political structure that has started to operate," the European commissioner said at the "EU meets the Balkans" forum today in Sofia.
He emphasized that "it doesn't matter that the steps of this decision are small", but the fact that this decision must be taken now.
Varhelji said that it is in the vital interest of the EU that its expansion takes place as soon as possible and that the meeting of the European Commission that will emerge from this year's elections should welcome the new members at the end of its mandate.
He also added that it is clear that the geopolitical landscape has changed in the last three years, especially since the Russian aggression against Ukraine as well as the Covid-19 crisis.
"Enlargement must happen, that is clear. It is vital that it happens as soon as possible and we are working hard to welcome the new EU members.
The door is open and we can achieve the necessary reforms," said Varhelji at the forum.
He also said that there are currently nine candidate countries, of which four are already negotiating and three have the green light to do so./ Pamphlet
