The Court of Appeal in London has ruled that the British government's policy of sending asylum seekers to Rwanda is illegal, the BBC reports.
Asylum seekers and a charity won their challenge against the government's asylum plan in Rwanda.
The government wants to send asylum seekers to the East African country, in part to prevent crossings by small boats. In December, the High Court dismissed a series of legal challenges to the government's plan, but some individual asylum seekers and the charity Asylum Aid took the case to the Court of Appeal
And today the court has decided that the appeal is allowed and the government has lost the case.
Two of the three judges found that Rwanda was not a "safe country" as asylum seekers can be sent home.
Earlier this week, the Home Office published an economic impact assessment of the government's illegal migration bill - including Rwanda's plan.
The ministry estimated that sending a migrant to a "safe country" such as Rwanda could cost £63,000 more than keeping them in the UK.
The amount is the difference between the gross cost of moving an individual - set at £169,000 - and the £106,000 spent on housing support if a migrant remains in the UK.
The £169,000 total includes an on-site payment of around £105,000 per person, as well as £22,000 for flights and accompanying the individual.
But the government argues the policy would also have a deterrent effect - leading to savings, including a lower hotel bill for asylum seekers.
However, the Home Office said it was "uncertain" what level of deterrent impact the policy would have because it was "new and untested".
