Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has been direct in his statements during an intergovernmental meeting in Berlin, where he drew attention to the region considered as "Europe's backyard", which seems to be turning into a battleground for influence.
He said that the Balkans should be a priority of the EU and should not be left in the hands of Russia.
"We cannot leave the Balkans in the hands of the Russians, Turks, Saudis and Chinese. This is why we need a large industrial presence of Europe there, and it depends on the large industrialized countries. We must bring these countries closer to the European Union", said Tajani.
The increased attention that the Western Balkans is receiving was clearly demonstrated by the regional tour of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, which came a few days after the sensational statement of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Russia is planning a war in the region. making it a second Middle East.
Stoltneberg, however, tried to allay fears of such a scenario and guaranteed the alliance's commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Western Balkans.
