Slovak Prime Minister Roberto Fico claims that European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen reprimanded him after a phone call he had with US President Donald Trump at a time when Washington was imposing tariffs on EU products.
Fico referred to an 'explosive' phone call he had earlier this Monday with Von der Leyen.
According to the Prime Minister, Von der Leyen belittled him and called him an idiot.
"Robert, what did you do, why did you negotiate like this with Trump? Are you completely lost? She scolded me for half an hour, said I was a big idiot," Fico is quoted as saying.
Then, in a post on social media, he explained that the way he initially explained the conversation with the President of the European Commission at a press conference was ironic.
"I hope the President of the European Commission understood the joke of today's press conference, when I told reporters that the President of the EC scolded me terribly, despite the fact that I did nothing, as the Slovak opposition claims, to prevent the US from imposing new customs tariffs against the whole world. I am afraid that the Slovak media and the opposition did not understand the joke," Fico wrote.
