
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iran sees it as its duty to avenge the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh because he was killed on Iranian soil.
"You killed our beloved guest in our home and now you have paved the way for your harsh punishment," Khamenei said, referring to Israel. We consider it our duty to seek the blood of our dear guest", he added.
The Israeli military declined to comment, although senior officials began a relentless bombing campaign in Gaza, with the stated aim of eliminating Hamas after October 7.
The political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in the Iranian capital, Tehran, this Wednesday. His assassination is expected to increase tensions in the Middle East.
