US presidential election, CNN poll: Trump leads over Biden

A year before the US presidential election, former President Donald Trump leads with 49% in a poll conducted by CNN against President Joe Biden, who enjoys the support of 45% of registered voters.

What stands out in the possible race between Biden and Trump, is that neither candidate has increased compared to the previous poll from the same company.

However, 51% of voters across America say there is no chance they will vote for Biden. Almost half, 48%, say there is no chance they will vote for Trump, and just 2% who are not currently supporting him say they might.

Biden's support in the poll is significantly weaker among some groups, where he won by a wide margin in the 2020 election. Among voters younger than 35, 48% support Trump and 47% support Biden.

Political independents give 45% of their votes to Trump and only 41% to Biden. Black voters favor Biden, with 73% in favor of him and only 23% for Trump, while Latino voters split 50% with Biden and 46% for Trump. And among black voters overall, 63% of female voters support Biden, while 31% support Trump. As for male voters, they are divided into 49% for Trump and 46% for Biden.

All of these differences reflect significant declines in support for Biden compared to exit polls in 2020. Now just ¼ of Americans (25%) say Biden has the stamina and acumen to serve effectively as president, while 53 % think that Trump is capable of governing properly.

Worryingly, only half of Democrats (51%) say Biden has the acuity and stamina to serve, compared to 90% of Republicans who side with Trump.

Biden's job performance in the White House currently attracts far more intense opposition than passionate support. This is because 42% of Americans strongly disapprove of his performance, with only 14% strongly approving. Vice President Kamala Harris has the same rating as Biden, 39% approve, while 61% disapprove.

The new poll also finds that 72% of all Americans believe things are going badly in the country today.

The numbers overall show that Biden's chances of re-election are low, buffeted by deeply negative approval ratings, a lingering sense that things are going wrong in the United States, waning support among key blocs of voters and a widespread sense that he is not ready for this task.
