Venezuela's armed forces have recognized Vice President Delcy Rodríguez as interim head of state.

Following the capture of President Nicolás Maduro by US special forces, she has assumed leadership of the country in accordance with the constitution, Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino said.

The military remains the most influential, perhaps even decisive, factor in Venezuela.

It is led by Vladimir Padrino, commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces. Over the past 10 years, the military has gradually expanded its control over almost every sector of life in Venezuela, from the economy to the civil administration, and there are no signs that this trend will change.

Delcy Rodríguez and her brother, Jorge Rodríguez, currently the speaker of Congress, have become central figures in power since Maduro came to power in Venezuela in 2013.

Another key player remains Diosdado Cabello, a former army captain and close ally of the late Hugo Chávez. Cabello continues to play the role of an important mediator between the political elite, the military, and economic interests.

The three figures appear united in denouncing what they call Maduro's "usurpation" of power and seem determined to preserve the political and institutional structures of the last decade.
