Holidays "crumble" the euro

The euro-lek exchange rate has hit a new historic low ahead of the end-of-year holidays. According to the official exchange rate published by the Bank of Albania, one euro was exchanged today for 96.46 lekë, the lowest level ever recorded.

Foreign exchange agents explain that in recent days the market has seen an increased supply of foreign currency, a phenomenon that is mainly related to seasonal factors. The return of emigrants for the end-of-year holidays brings higher flows of euros to the market, exerting downward pressure on the exchange rate.

Despite this new record, the annual decline of the euro against the lek remains more moderate compared to previous years. Compared to the same period last year, the euro-lek exchange rate resulted in a decline of about 2.1 percent.

According to estimates, the relative stabilization of the exchange rate during this year is not only related to market mechanisms, but also to the interventions of the Bank of Albania, which have influenced the smoothing of fluctuations and the maintenance of a more controlled exchange rate performance.
