Enterprises with foreign owners or co-owners account for 5.3% of the total enterprises operating in Albania, with a slight decrease of 0.3 percent compared to 2021. Referring to INSTAT data, there are a total of 4934 completely foreign businesses and 1655 in co-ownership. Foreign enterprises employ 12.5% of the total employees.
But which countries choose to dominate the market in the country?
Enterprises from European Union countries represent 62.7% of foreign and joint enterprises.
Owners or co-owners of Italian and Greek origin represent 48.8% of the total foreign joint ventures. Italy opens the list, where there are 2875 businesses that are owned by an Italian citizen or jointly owned, followed by Kosovo, with 460 enterprises, Turkey and Greece are ranked third, respectively with 341 businesses operating in the country each and Germany is next.
In the last place is Israel with only 52 active activities. Foreign joint ventures are mainly concentrated in the municipalities of Tirana and Durrës, respectively 70.7% and 11.5%. Most of them are positioned in the service sector, mainly in the "other" activity and trade, followed by industry and information and communication.
