Albania has officially launched legal preparations for the adoption of the euro, taking an important step in aligning the institutional framework with European Union standards.
The new draft law "On the Bank of Albania", published for public consultation, includes for the first time a special chapter regulating the functioning of the central bank after the country's membership in the Eurozone.
According to the draft law, from the date of entry into force of the euro as the official currency of the Republic of Albania, the euro will replace the lek as the national monetary unit. The Bank of Albania will assume responsibility for the issuance and withdrawal of euro banknotes and coins, in accordance with the rules of the European Union and the European Central Bank.
The draft law also provides that the Bank of Albania will determine the national design of the euro coins to be issued by the country. Like other Eurozone countries, Albania will have a common European side and a national side on the coins, according to standards set by the European Union.
The inclusion of these provisions in the legislation does not imply Albania's immediate entry into the Eurozone, but creates the legal basis for the functioning of the central bank once the country meets the conditions for adopting the single European currency.
