For the first time since the creation of the euro, European Union citizens can choose the design of their future banknotes. The European Central Bank (ECB) today presented the 10 finalist designs for the new euro series and launched a public consultation that will remain open until 21 September.
According to ECB President Christine Lagarde, euro banknotes are more than a means of payment.
"Euro banknotes are one of the most tangible expressions of Europe. Through a design that combines beauty with meaning, they will strengthen our common identity," said Lagarde.
The finalist projects were selected following an international competition in which over 1,200 designers from European Union countries participated. After a first selection phase, 25 authors developed their proposals, while an independent jury of 21 experts selected the 10 finalist designs.
The ECB has proposed two main themes for the new series: "European Culture" and "Rivers and Birds".
If the theme of European culture is chosen, the banknotes will bear portraits of well-known historical figures such as Maria Callas, Ludwig van Beethoven, Marie Curie, Miguel de Cervantes, Leonardo da Vinci and Nobel Peace Prize winner Bertha von Suttner, accompanied by scenes reflecting European cultural life.
The other alternative depicts Europe's natural ecosystems, following the flow of a river from source to sea, accompanied by characteristic bird species. The back of the banknotes will feature the main institutions of the European Union, including the European Parliament, the European Commission, the European Central Bank, the Court of Justice, the European Council and the European Court of Auditors.
The new series will replace the current banknote design, which has been used since the introduction of the euro in 2002 and is based on imaginary bridges, windows and gates, originally chosen to avoid favoring the symbols of any member state.
