The three cities most affected by the fall of the euro

The latest data from the Bank of Albania show that bank deposits in the second quarter of the year, compared to the first quarter, are decreasing for all districts (Bank of Albania's definition of local communities). The figures analyzed and processed by "Scan Intel" show that Lezha is the district/city with the largest drop in deposits, with a full 2.3% during the second quarter of the year. Lezha is followed by Vlora, with 1.8%, and then Durrës with a 1.4% decrease. Korça follows the ranking, with a 1.2% decrease, as well as Tirana with 1%. On the other hand, Fieri with a 0.4% decrease and Elbasan with a 0.5% are the districts/cities with the lowest decrease in deposits during this time period, signal the official figures.

This decrease is entirely the result of the devaluation of the euro and other currencies, given that for statistical reasons deposits are expressed in Lek by the Bank of Albania. If we look at the figures of deposits by district and currency, we understand that the same applies to all cities; in Lek are increasing, while in foreign currency decreasing. Lezha, Fieri and Durrësi are the cities that recorded the biggest drop in deposits in foreign currency, expressed in Lek. For Lezha the drop is 4.7%, for Fier close to 3.5% and for Durrës close to 3.6%. Meanwhile, Tirana is the city with the lowest depreciation of foreign currency deposits among other cities, with "only" 1.9% in the second quarter of the year, compared to the first quarter. Fieri with a 2.3% increase and Elbasan and Durrës with 1 each.

But what stands out the most from the figures is their analysis only for individuals, i.e. citizens, without including business. In all districts/cities reported by the Bank of Albania, the drop in deposits for individuals is higher than the total drop, which means that the devaluation of the euro has significantly affected citizens more than businesses or the central or local government. No city escapes this phenomenon. For Tirana, for example, the total drop in deposits is fixed at around 1%, while only for individuals around 2%. Lezha with 2.9%, Vlora with 2.5% and Tirana with a 2% decrease are the cities most affected by the devaluation of citizens' deposits, as a result of the collapse of the euro.

In absolute terms, it is about 20 billion ALL in total losses from individuals in just three months, which translates into almost 200 million euros at today's exchange rate. For Tirana alone, this loss is over 90 million euros.

These figures speak clearly about the effect of the devaluation of the euro on the family economy, and where these economies have been damaged more and where less. The dimensions of the exchange rate performance do not seem negligible at all, and on the other hand, these figures do not reflect the free fall of the euro during the month of July./SCAN
