Self-employment falls to 29.3%, the lowest level since 2015

We used to have a decline in employment, or rather it was declining all the time, now self-employment has also declined. In the second quarter of 2023, it turns out that the self-employed accounted for 29.3% of total employment. This was the lowest percentage since the second quarter of 2015. And when INSTAT says this, imagine a more independent office. Self-employment entered a downward trend from the third quarter of 2022, when it accounted for 32% of the total. This decline is showing the changing structure of employment.

The lack of employees has influenced the increase of wages in the private sector in recent years. Employment offers often exceed earnings from small service units, causing a shift from self-employment to wage employment. Albania has one of the highest rates of self-employment in Europe.

According to Eurostat data, self-employment has fallen in the EU over the years, from 10.2% in 2010 to 8.9% in 2021. Self-employment was most common in countries outside the EU, especially in Albania, 35% of all workers, and Serbia, 16% of all workers.
