The savings of Albanians are devalued / "Digjen" 400 million euros in

Deposits in broad money have fallen for the 4th month in a row during May, signal the latest figures from the Bank of Albania. Thus, broad money deposits have decreased to 1.253 trillion lek in May, from about 1.253 trillion lek in April. The decrease is fixed at 0.1% in nominal terms, and at 1.6 billion ALL in absolute terms. And why the pace of deposit contraction has stopped compared to the previous months, when it was close to 1%, it still remains in decline for the fourth month in a row, since February of this year.

Meanwhile, this year, it seems that about 3.3% of deposits in broad money, or about ALL 42.3 billion, have been "burned". This figure translates into a full 395 million euros less deposits in broad money in just 4 months in our country, which signals a significant reduction in the savings of Albanians. In one month, lost deposits in ALL are fixed at 0.2%, or about ALL 1.35 billion. This means that about 83% of the depreciation of deposits was "financed" by those in Lek. Lek deposits in broad money are fixed at 542 billion lek in May of this year.

As for foreign currency deposits, in this direction, a contraction is also observed during May, but in almost negligible figures, of only 270 million ALL, or 0.04% compared to April of this year. Deposits in foreign currency in broad money are fixed at a value converted into Lek near 711 billion Lek in May of this year. However, for the latter, the effect of the exchange rate as a result of the conversion into Lek for statistical reasons also affects.

Meanwhile, what stands out from the figures is that if we look at deposits according to another definition, i.e. deposits in the banking sector, not in broad money, and in foreign currency, not converted into lek. According to these figures, we understand that in May of this year, foreign currency deposits reached 6.6 billion euros, from about 6.5 billion euros in April, increasing by 1.7% in monthly terms. This increase is the highest ever recorded for the month of May, an atypical month in terms of the growth of foreign currency deposits, since historically there have been lower flows of tourists, and especially immigrants. However, even these trends have been ``broken'' during the last year.

On the other hand, the monetary aggregates during May are all decreasing, both those with high liquidity and the indicators that signal low liquidity. Even the indicator of money outside depository corporations is down in May. Overall, the figures signal that there are fewer savings in Lek, but more in Euro. However, the devaluation of the latter is further impoverishing Albanians./Scan Tv
