I really hope that during this summer we will receive good news from Cuba, that it too, perhaps the last people, the last communist regime in the world after North Korea, will be saved from the unprecedented violence that has denatured such a sympathetic people...
I have never understood why America has not done its best to save Cuba, that is, to overthrow the communist regime of Cuba, which has been holding the breath of that country for almost 60-70 years. While America has gone so far with its troops, from Vietnam, to Korea, to Afghanistan, to Iraq, to Iran and many other areas of the world, which are 10,000-15,000 kilometers away. While Cuba is 60-70 miles away, so very close.
How is it possible that he has let this country degenerate to such an extent, without doing anything for its people? I am not an interventionist, so I am not a person who believes that democracies come with war.
Or that bloody or predatory regimes in various countries can be overthrown with the help of foreign armies. In general, I am a pacifist and I wanted Cuba to solve its problems peacefully.
But what does it matter, apparently the time has come for the Cuban regime to be tightened, and apparently America is doing this with more vigor than in the last 50 years, and with more will. And perhaps during this summer we will see that the Cuban regime may perhaps fall.
The last time I was in Cuba, a couple of years ago, I had never seen that island worse than it is now. So, if I could compare it to something familiar, it was the 80s in Albania, but it was much worse. Everything was in tatters, there was no food, the city, Havana, seemed unclean, the people were depressed, very poor, with miserable salaries.
A policeman in Cuba is paid 20 dollars, if he takes those too. So a catastrophe, a wonderful city like Havana, ruined, totally poor. And somewhat surprised by this, because we are used to seeing Cuba, seeing it as a colorful, like a musical ensemble that doesn't rest day and night, I asked a taxi driver who was accompanying me those days, and I said to him: "How is it possible that you have tolerated this regime for 60 years and not done anything?
We all overthrew communism, even we who were very poor overthrew our communism with our own means.” He said, “We try, but we can’t do it because we don’t have weapons. And if we go out to protest, they will kill us.”
So we don't have weapons to defend ourselves.
I hope that America will not solve the problems with weapons in Cuba, and create victims there. But I really hope that through coercion, it will force the Cuban regime to relinquish power. So in a sense, it will move to a pacifist process where it will give ground. So that Cuba will be governed by more than one party or that there will be future free elections where democracy will finally make way for a market economy, and a free market, of course.
I'll tell you something that in Cuba, so that people understand what Cuba is. Because of the fear that the communist regime has that people might escape to America, as happened with the Albanians who went to Italy by boat 30-40 years ago, the poor Cubans are not even allowed to fish in their own sea. So it's the only island in the world where you can't eat fish. Because fishing is not allowed because of the fear of escapes in small boats. This is the Cuba of today.
So I really hope that during this summer we will receive good news from Cuba, and that it, perhaps the last people, the last communist regime in the world after North Korea, will be saved from an unprecedented violence that has denatured a people as charming and as kind as Cuba. So I really hope that soon we will say: Cuba Libre!
