Does the DP have such a leader or leaders? There is more than one.
"So, Berisha resigned, but who will replace him?" This is the question often heard among Democrats after the Democratic Party's electoral defeat in the May 11 elections, where this party and its allies increased the difference with the Socialist Party tenfold. From about two percent four years ago to about twenty percent now.
The cult of the irreplaceable leader is deeply embedded in the Berisha bloc of the DP. The one who has invested more than anyone in this Stalinist-Enverist atavism has been and is Berisha himself. By exploiting the worldviews of the previous regime in the mindset of his followers.
The complete opposite of what an enlightened leader would have done and would do in the conditions of the exit from the totalitarian regime. He would inspire followers and voters with the new political culture of democracy; he would elevate them mentally and spiritually, challenging the easy Enverist school of evil spirits in the realm of their worldview and worldview;
It would promote a new system of values and customs where the individual who doubts and thinks differently about a certain issue is not an enemy but a value. Because this searching individual and not the cheering crowd is the bearer of truth and justice. Because democrats do not seek truth and justice in terms of Bolshevism but of discussion, maximum possible consensus and unity in diversity. Because a political identity is strengthened through disagreements and not imposed or conformist unanimity, as the distinguished philosopher Roger Scruton writes in his famous book, “How to Be Right”.
All of these and many more are sacred "commandments" of the identity of a center-right party. Which is not right-wing because it calls itself right-wing, but when it functions as such.
Renewing the leadership is another "commandment" in this way. The question "who should lead us" is considered wrong for democratic culture. (In this sense, the question "who should take over the DP if Berisha leaves" is wrong).
Why is it called wrong? Because in a democracy, the leader is chosen through free, fair, and equal competition. These elements must function in harmony. If one of them is violated or missing, the election will be flawed and useless in the goal of defeating the opposing party.
Equality has been absent in the vast majority of races for the election of the chairman of the DP. Even when he had to delegate the post of formal chairman, remaining himself in the role of chairman of the chairman, the elections in the DP have been determined by Berisha and inequality. However, the formal renewal of the leader, although with a bullet in his leg, such as the example of Lulzim Basha, has given sparks and positive effects. In the 2021 elections, Basha managed to open the race to take power. Until the photo finish in Tirana. At a time when Rama's government had the support of more electoral gangs and many corrupt officials who have ended up in prison or on the run these four years thanks to SPAK investigations.
Let us imagine the impulses that would have brought and would bring to the DP a leader who is elected through a free, fair and equal competition, where Sali Berisha offers himself as one of the guarantors of the equal competition, but does not participate himself and maintains impartiality. He must choose: to fall with him, or to allow its rise as a popular party through new success stories that would be added, as in a relay, to the previous ones with his sign. Otherwise, the very history of the subject risks being archived.
Does the DP have such a leader or leaders? There is more than one. There are several. The winner of a fair race is strengthened in the leadership suit by the uncontested victory itself, the responsibility itself, the very leadership of the Party based on the program with which it has made the difference with its rivals, integrating them as colleagues in party positions.
Such a leader, a reformer of communication and an accommodator of reason in the Party, leads the DP to victory in the next elections.
But if Berisha insists on leading it to a new and even greater defeat with each of Edi Rama's fresh successors, the chances of a rebirth of the DP after five consecutive defeats would be reduced to a minimum. Political science puts a party on a course of accelerated decline that loses so many elections in a row. At this point in the case of Berisha, unique in post-communist Europe, there is no chance of challenging the laws.
