Someone caught driving under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs in Virginia is automatically arrested and must spend about $16,000 to get their license back after 6 months.
I have published 63 scientific articles in the US about unnatural injuries/deaths. Three-quarters of them have been about road injuries/deaths. The road conditions and traffic codes there are different from those in Albania, but some valuable lessons can be drawn from the studies I have conducted.
From my research, I have found that the state with the lowest road injuries/deaths (per million kilometers traveled by vehicles) in the US is Virginia. And this state has the strictest Highway Code in America. Someone caught in Virginia driving under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs is automatically arrested and must spend about $16,000 to get their license back after 6 months. The police in Virginia occasionally organize random checkpoints at “hot spots”, where every driver is tested for alcohol. In the Virginia Highway Code, dangerous overtaking and speeding 85 mph are considered reckless driving and constitute a criminal offense. Etc., etc.
In the last 15 years in Albania, the number of road injuries/deaths has halved, while the number of vehicles in circulation has doubled. However, we have not yet reached the European Union average in this regard.
Since we aim to join the European Union in 2030, we need to find a way to get closer to it in terms of road injury/death rates. Perhaps the Virginia Highway Code can be taken as an example. But more importantly, we need to increase the number of officers and electronic devices for the Highway Police, which will have to enforce a stricter road code…
