The 39th president of the USA, Jimmy Carter, passed away yesterday. But, few know that the democrat who lived for 100 years and two months, was the first highest American political profile to visit Albania leaving behind even the Secretary of State James Becker on June 22, 1991. On August 31, 1993 Jimmy Carter arrived in Tirana invited by the President of the Republic Sali Berisha and stayed in the Albanian capital for several days. Although with the status of former president and accompanied by former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, his presence in Albania was of great importance. Carter's activity for the protection of human rights also put Kosovo Albanians on the agenda and this was the main reason for his visit.
Jimmy Carter had a remarkable experience in solving conflicts in the world. He was the negotiator and author of the resolution of the conflict between Israel and Egypt in 1979, reaching a historic agreement, and for this he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Founder and head of the "Carter" foundation, the former American president took the initiative to protect and help Albanians in Yugoslavia.
Previously, in the US, he had previously organized special meetings and seminars for the Albanians of Yugoslavia, Montenegro and Macedonia. The newspaper "Zeri i Populli" of the Socialist Party wrote, among others, in the issue of September 2, 1993:
"In this framework, Albanians on both sides of the border look at the person of Jimmy Carter as the defender of human rights and freedoms and see their friend as such and welcome his arrival in Albania. They will hope and wish that his visit to Albania will affect the protection of the rights of Albanians in Kosovo, Macedonia and Montenegro and the reduction of Serbian negotiations."
