What criminal organizations fear most is the written word. This has been determined for the first time by a court in Italy. It took me 17 years to see justice done, but it finally came on July 14th.
The Court of Appeal in Rome confirmed the 2021 verdict, by which mafia boss Francesco Bidognetti and his former lawyer were found guilty of mafia threats against me.
Bidognetti is the head of one of the most powerful and violent clans of the Camorra: the Casalesi. He is already in prison, serving a life sentence. However, this new decision (Bidognetti was sentenced to a year and a half in prison, while his lawyer Michele Santonastaso to a year and two months) is not just symbolic, but extremely important.
This decision is a condemnation for a case that was not just an ordinary act of intimidation, but unique in the history of organized crime. It took place publicly in March 2008, during the “Spartacus supertrial” that lasted 10 years, with 115 defendants and 27 life sentences, including Bidognetti himself.
That day, through his lawyer, Bidognetti publicly articulated his “criminal truth” by declaring me and the journalist Rosaria Capacchione responsible if he was convicted. Santonastaso read aloud in court a document, a “proclamation” that we later learned was similar to statements by terrorist organizations.
This was an unprecedented act in the history of mafia trials. The message was cold and threatening: if the two mafia bosses in the dock, Bidognetti and Antonio Iovine, ended up in prison, as they did, it would be our fault. Our articles, our investigations, and our influence with prosecutors would be the cause.
After reading the document, Santonastaso removed his lawyer's robes. It was a symbolic gesture to say that from that moment on, the game would take place outside the courtroom. This proclamation had a clear purpose: to silence us journalists and to let the outside world know that those who should be held responsible for Bidognetti's conviction had names.

Do të thotë humbje jo vetëm të lirisë së lëvizjes, por edhe të lirisë ndërpersonale dhe emocionale. Çdo takim zhvillohet prapa dyerve të mbyllura. Nuk ka privatësi. Intimiteti zhduket. Spontaniteti shuhet.
Pasojat nuk janë vetëm praktike, por edhe të thella. Marrëdhëniet e mia romantike janë dëmtuar. Miqësitë janë rralluar nga pesha e situatës sime. Kushdo që ndërvepron me mua, ndien nevojën të më mbrojë, të thithë tensionin tim. Kjo është e padurueshme për këdo.
Për 17 vjet kam përballuar gjyqe, seanca dhe përpjekje për të njollosur emrin tim, jo vetëm nga klanet, por edhe nga elementë të shtetit që duhej të më mbronin, por në vend të kësaj e thelluan izolimin tim.
Gazetaria antimafia është izoluar, kriminalizuar dhe tërhequr zvarrë në gjykata. Në këtë heshtje, mafia ka fituar. Ajo e ka zhdukur nga diskursi publik, por jo nga realiteti. Ajo është shndërruar në një fuqi ekonomike, një formë kapitalizmi kriminal, e padukshme por përfshirëse.
The July 14 decision goes beyond symbolism: it was an act of judicial recognition that Bidognetti's proclamation in 2008 was a threat and directly linked to his mafia enterprise. We could say that it was a "fatwa", a signal to anyone within the clan who wanted to climb the hierarchy, eliminating a named target.
For the first time in a trial against a criminal organization, we see that the mafia considers investigative journalists to be the main cause of its losses. According to this criminal logic, to write, to report or to be investigated, means to interfere with justice. And so, those who write about the mafia must be punished. This is an admission that everything that may happen to me from now on will bear their signature.
I emerge from this ordeal shattered. I have sacrificed my life for a battle that has consumed me completely. My existence is a form of eternal punishment, suspended between fear, isolation, and surveillance. Solitude is the additional punishment for courage.
It's possible that nothing will change in Italy, but at least I can say that I helped expose how the mafia works. And believe me, it's not just limited to Italy, it's a network that also targets global financial centers, including London.
I will remain under police protection for an indefinite period, because the judges confirmed that the mafia bosses are afraid of what I write. But I don’t want to live like this anymore. Little by little, I will take responsibility to regain my freedom, to regain my life, even at my own risk.
