He has been working for years as a waiter in a bar in front of SPAK, where I stop almost every day. An educated, hardworking and very civil man. You never get tired of serving everyone.
14-year-old Martin is no longer alive. He closed his eyes forever from a stab wound to the heart. There, right next to the perimeter of the 9-year-old "Fan Noli" school that he attended. The suspected perpetrator, a schoolmate of Martin's, was arrested on suspicion of "intentional murder" and "illegal possession of cold weapons". The fight between them started on social networks.
A great drama that happens every day in Albanian schools. As a mother of two children who attend public school, I am well informed about what really happens. How dramatic is the situation with bullying, suspicions of abuses, violence and the possession of cold weapons without a permit. I see and report day after day how drug doses are sold in the premises around the school, poisoning children, and how alcohol is sold.
The fights start in the school benches, and unfortunately end in tragic events outside their doors. Every day I worry about what happens at school with my children and their friends. After the tragic event of Martin, I believe every father and mother has gone through his mind; what if he was my child, To return to Martin. I didn't know him. His father the Angel yes. He has been working for years as a waiter in a bar in front of SPAK, where I stop almost every day. An educated, hardworking and very civil man. You never get tired of serving everyone. Yesterday, ironically, he confessed to an acquaintance of mine that he would finally leave for America. He would leave Albania, hoping for a better life for himself and his family. He told her this detail while serving her coffee. Even before she got up from the table, the Angel leaves in shock. The son was killed. My friend called me shocked. He showed me the conversation. How could I hold back my tears? Angel was an exemplary father. That he tried to pass on to Martin, the model of a man who is not ashamed of his work, but devotes himself to provide a dignified life for his family.
Despite titanic efforts, he could not save Martin. Tomorrow at 14:00 he will escort him to the last apartment. I don't know yet if he will finally decide to leave Albania. But I know that the whole society is guilty of Martin's murder.
The blame starts with the family, then teachers, social workers, school psychologists, security officers, local government, the Ministry of Education and the police.
We as a society are failing to create good role models for our children. To educate the generation. We are not able to give our children a hope for the future. The state has failed by not creating protective mechanisms.
Martin's innocent eyes should shock us all. Don't let us sleep peacefully. To reflect deeply. Today we all have to be Martin's mother, father, sister, brother. If we do this urgently, tomorrow will be too late. Child protection is a national emergency!
