The State News Agency (AMNA) has decided not to renew the contract of journalist Panajot Barka.
With a press release published on its official website, the Union of Journalists of Athens protests against the non-renewal of the employment contract of the minority journalist Barka with the State News Agency of Greece AMNA.
As it is known, the contract of the journalist in question has not been renewed after more than 20 years of continuous cooperation with this agency. Specifically, the statement in question reads: "The Board of Directors of the Union of Journalists of Athens (ESIEA) condemns the decision of the leaders of NEWS AGENCY for not renewing the contract of AMNA correspondent in Gjirokastra Panagiotis Barkas, in an unfair and abusive manner, after more than 20 years of cooperation.
ESIEA's Board of Directors strongly protests and declares that it will stand by the colleague in any legal action to protect his labor rights.
It is learned that today, the journalist Barkas, has sent a letter to many media institutions, government and journalists' media where he describes the reasons for not renewing his contract with the Greek State Agency and asks for solidarity and reaction to this action, which he calls illegal and unjustified , another action against journalistic ethics and functioning, against freedom of speech and democracy.
Among other things, he emphasizes that it is a question of an all-out attack against him, which seeks to intimidate the Greeks in Albania not to speak, which aims to silence the truth and silence all responsibilities for what was done against Hellenism in Albania.
Barkas says that the decision is the product of political interference. "Circles of Vorioepiriots with access to the ruling party and some government ministers, have requested my dismissal from the agency - he writes, adding that - these circles did not agree with my personal views (not those that I publish in the news of the agency ) but for the issues of Hellenism in Vorioepire, and mainly the Beleris issue, so they accused me of not following national politics".
Barka has notified the Greek Prime Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and other competent official bodies, requesting their intervention, but has not received a response.
"It is not only a slanderous and contemptuous attitude towards a correspondent with 28 years of cooperation, but also towards the only Greek journalist outside Greece in the public media, against a leader of the Greek National Minority, founder and deputy of OMONIAS, writer with activity of rich in favor of Hellenism, with hundreds of articles and presentations in the Albanian media in favor of Hellenism", writes Barka.
It is worth noting that a few days ago the European Parliament approved a resolution that raises concerns, among others, about the freedom of the press in Greece, the concentration of media power in the hands of the oligarchs, and the way state subsidies are distributed to them. / Top channel
