An Albanian couple is known as "Bonnie and Clyde" in Italy after escaping from prison.
Emilian Bici, 43, and Ermelinda Saphiu, 38, husband and wife, fled to escape after being released from prison in Italy on leave as part of a social reintegration plan. They are accused of attempted murder, after they wounded a person with a knife in 2018.
According to Italian media, they were working on a farm in de Leyva in Pesaro, but when the police returned to pick them up, they were gone.
They escaped on Tuesday, taking advantage of outside work which allowed them to leave the prison at 7am and then return after 8 hours. From that moment, the search for the couple began, extending first to the territory of the province, then to all of Italy.
Police and Carabinieri checked train and bus stations, also looking at camera images to see if the fugitives had passed through any departure points.
They also searched their cells for any clues that might point to an escape route. It is not excluded that they had accomplices with whom they left, already having a safe destination, perhaps abroad, where they could go in order not to return and be taken back to prison.
According to Italian media, it is believed that the couple had been organizing the escape plan for some time, counting on their usual schedules, in addition to the dedication to work they showed at the educational farm that cooperates with the Pesaro prison for the social reintegration of prisoners.
