In prison for money laundering, the Albanian wins the battle in the English

The Home Office sought to strip dual national Gjelos Kolicaj, 42, of his British citizenship and deport him after he was jailed for six years for money laundering.

He is accused of making £8m by laundering money from the UK which he flew in using his British passport, the Daily Telegraph reports.

He was described by the National Crime Agency as having a significant role in an organized crime group in Britain and as a high risk person.

But immigration judges accepted his appeal against stripping him of his citizenship and deportation on the grounds that the Home Office failed to consider his human rights and other claims in their decision.

Kolicaj gained dual UK-Albanian citizenship in 2009 after entering Britain and marrying a British woman. He divorced her and married an Albanian woman in 2013 with whom he has two children. Both are British citizens as they were born in Britain. His new wife, an Albanian citizen, is seeking permission to stay in Britain.

The court's decision has provoked reactions. "This shows why we need urgent reforms of the asylum system and human rights laws to allow the speedy and effective deportation of dangerous criminals," said a senior Tory MP.

Kolicaj was convicted of money laundering in February 2018 following an investigation by authorities. The decision to strip him of his citizenship was made in January 2021 as Kolicaj and his brother, an accomplice, would "continue to pose a danger after the end of their sentence".

Kolicaj claimed legal errors in the decision and violation of his right to family life according to Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
